Welcome to Bidar Fort. In the fifteenth century the Bahmani sultans moved their capital here from Gulbarga, and built this huge fort on the edge of the Bidar plateau. Its walls run for kilometres and are protected by a triple moat cut into the red laterite rock. Enter through the Gumbaz Darwaza, then look for the Rangin Mahal, the colourful palace famous for its wood carving, tile work and mother of pearl inlay, and the Solah Khamba mosque with its long row of pillars. Underground water channels called karez once carried water to the fort. Take your time, walk the ramparts at sunset, and imagine the court life of the Deccan five hundred years ago.
