Bahmani Tombs, Ashtur

Welcome to the Bahmani tombs at Ashtur, just outside Bidar. These great domed tombs belong to the Bahmani sultans who ruled the Deccan from Bidar. The tomb of Sultan Ahmad Shah Wali, who moved the capital to Bidar, is the most famous: inside, the walls and dome are still covered with painted patterns and calligraphy in gold, red and blue. He is remembered as a saint, and the yearly urs here draws people of many faiths. Walk around the row of tombs to see how the domes grow larger and grander over time.
